Meeting Biram – send a message (WalkFree)

You might remember Biram Dah Abeid, a prominent and outspoken anti-slavery activist in Mauritania. He was imprisoned in January 2015 for protesting the government’s weak stance on tackling slavery. Our Walk Free community rallied behind Biram, taking 231,907 actions online, on the phone and in person, undertaken by activists like you. He was finally freed in May 2016.

And now, we’re delighted to announce that Biram will be visiting London on 8 December. We want to take this brilliant opportunity to share with him in person the messages of Walk Free supporters around the world.

Mauritania has one of the world’s highest proportions of its population living in slavery.[1] The government was the last to abolish slavery in 1981, but since then has failed to make progress towards its end. Biram’s organisation, the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement, acts as a rare voice in the country speaking out for the rights of those enslaved.

In May 2016, alongside fellow activist Brahim Bilal Ramdhane, Biram was honoured with the Trafficking In Persons Award, recognising his tireless efforts to protect victims of slavery in Mauritania.[2] Disturbingly, while Biram was away, a wave of arrests authorised by the Mauritanian Government saw a group of his colleagues sent behind bars. Although 10 were finally released just a couple of weeks ago, three remain in prison, revealing just how much needs to be done to change attitudes towards ending slavery.

This is the time to show those who remain incarcerated in Mauritania that we haven’t forgotten them.

Pass on your message for Biram and we’ll deliver it in person!

Last year, we mailed over 4,000 messages of encouragement to Biram from Walk Free supporters to the prison authorities where he was incarcerated. This time, we will personally be ensuring that he receives every supporter message.

Send your message and show Biram that the international community is behind him in his mission to abolish slavery in Mauritania.

In solidarity,

Zoe, Joanna and the Walk Free team
