DES DÉPUTÉS MARQUENT L’ANNIVERSAIRE DU DÉCÈS DE NELSON MANDELA EN DEMANDANT LA LIBÉRATION DE PRISONNIERS POLITIQUES
À la veille de la Journée internationale des droits de la personne, l’ancien ministre de la Justice Irwin Cotler se joint à des députés pour souligner les cas de dissidents au Venezuela, en Iran, en Mauritanie, et en Arabie Saoudite
Ottawa – Le 10 décembre 2015 – L’ancien ministre de la Justice Irwin Cotler s’est joint aux députés Judy Sgro (libéral), Scott Reid (conservateur), Murray Rankin (NDP), et Elizabeth May (vert) pour marquer l’anniversaire du décès de Nelson Mandela et la Journée internationale des droits de la personne en exigeant la libération de quatre prisonniers politiques inspirés par le courage et l’engagement de Mandela.
M. Cotler, qui a été conseiller juridique de Mandela, a pris fait et cause pour trois prisonniers politique, à la demande de leurs familles et représentants. « Nelson Mandela a été un modèle héroïque, et l’impact causé par sa libération de prison après des années d’emprisonnement démontre l’effet transformateur que peut avoir la libération de prisonniers politiques. Chacun des quatre prisonniers dont il est question aujourd’hui personnifie la philosophie de Mandela, et est lui-même un modèle héroïque. Le professeur Cotler a récemment fondé le Centre Raoul Wallenberg pour les droits de la personne, qui a pris fait et cause pour ces quatre prisonniers.
Le prisonnier politique vénézuélien Leopoldo López est fondateur et chef du parti politique Voluntad Popular (Volonté Populaire). Il a été condamné à 14 ans de prison pour son rôle dans des manifestations pro-démocratie à l’issue d’un procès dénué de tout apparence de régularité et de légalité. Le Sous-comité des droits internationaux de la personne des Affaires étrangères a l’an dernier adopté une motion exigeant la libération de López.
Le prisonnier politique iranien (Ayatollah ) Hossein Kazamani Boroujerdi est un clerc qui milite pour la séparation de la religion et de l’État. Il est emprisonné depuis 2006 sous de fausses accusations, et des soins médicaux d’urgence lui sont refusés. Plus tôt cet automne, il a été transféré de la prison notoire d’Évine à un endroit secret, et l’on craint que le régime se prépare à l’exécuter. »
Le prisonnier politique mauritanien Biram Dah Abeida été arrêté pour ses activités anti-esclavage dans le pays qui dénombre le plus grand pourcentage d’esclaves au monde. Au moment de son arrestation, il participait à la Caravane de la liberté, une initiative de la IRA-Mauritania (Initiative pour la résurgence du mouvement abolitionniste) dont il est président.
Le prisonnier politique saoudien Raïf Badawi a été condamné à 10 ans de prison, 1,000 coups de fouet, et au paiement d’une amende exorbitante pour le simple exercice de sa liberté d’expression. L’épouse et les trois enfants de Raïf ont reçu l’asile politique au Canada et résident à Sherbrooke.

MPs MARK ANNIVERSARY OF MANDELA’S PASSING WITH CALL TO FREE POLITICAL PRISONERS
Former Justice Minister Irwin Cotler join Parliamentarians on eve of International Human Rights Day to highlight cases of imprisoned dissidents in Venezuela, Iran, Mauritania and Saudi Arabia
Ottawa – December 10, 2015 – Former Justice Minister Irwin Cotler joined MPs Judy Sgro (Liberal), Scott Reid (Conservative), Murray Rankin (NDP), and Elizabeth May (Green) to mark the second anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s passing – and International Human Rights Day – by calling for the release of four political prisoners inspired by Mandela’s courage and commitment.
Irwin Cotler, who acted as counsel to Mandela, has taken up the cases of the four political prisoners at the request of their families and representatives. Said Cotler, “Nelson Mandela was a heroic role model, and the impact of his release after years of political imprisonment demonstrates the potential transformative effect of freeing political prisoners. Each of these four prisoners embodies the Mandela ethos, and is a heroic role model in his own right.” Cotler recently founded the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, which has also taken the case and cause of these four prisoners.
Venezuelan political prisoner Leopoldo López is the founder and leader of the opposition party Voluntad Popular (Popular Will), who was recently sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for his role in pro-democracy protests in a trial devoid of any semblance of due process or legality. Last year, the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Human Rights unanimously adopted a resolution condemning his imprisonment and calling for his release.
Iranian political prisoner Ayatollah Hossein Kazamani Boroujerdi is a senior cleric and long-time advocate for freedom of religion in Iran. He has been imprisoned since 2006 on a series of trumped-up charges, has been threatened with execution, and is being denied urgent medical care as a form of passive execution.
Mauritanian political prisoner Biram Dah Abeid has been imprisoned for his anti-slavery advocacy in a country which has the largest percentage of enslaved people in the world. At the time of his arrest, he was participating in the Caravan of Liberty, an initiative of IRA-Mauritania (Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement) of which he is President.
Saudi Arabian political prisoner Raïf Badawi has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, 1,000 lashes, and an exorbitant punitive fine for doing nothing other than exercising his freedom of expression. Raïf Badawi’s wife and three children have been given refugee status in Canada and are living in Sherbrooke, Québec.
